| | | Robins at birdfeeder Hi
I've just joined WAB and am a real novice with regards to birdwatching. It started last year when I put a birdfeeder on some land belonging to my workplace which has been sown as a wildflower meadow next to a brook and small wooded area. Since then, I see a number of great tits (a family?) everyday at the feeder. There are a couple of blackbirds which forage on the ground around the feeder and I've today seen 2 robins attempting to take seed from a feeder, which I thought unusual as robins usually fight being territorial? I may be wrong. Occasionally a jay visits but I think this is to watch the other birds, which the magpies also do. A squirrel entertains with his acrobatics but is usually unsuccessful in taking any food. Last year I was lucky enough to catch sight of a couple of deer in the woodland but haven't seen any since then. |

A good selection of birds in your garden, certainly more than I get!!
Robin's will feed together, it may be a pair, which is why they're not fighting. Also Robin's will be more aggressive as the Spring starts and nests are established.

| | | Re: Robins at birdfeeder Hi Nige and thanks for the warm welcome. Yes, I am very lucky in being able to watch the wildlife from my working desk - it certainly makes the day much brighter.
I'll certainly watch out for any change in behaviour in the robins when Spring approaches. Not long now thank goodness.

| | | Re: Robins at birdfeeder Hi and welcome to WAB! How nice to be able to watch the birds from your desk... If you want to encourage the blackbirds and robins more you can scatter some raisins and a bit of birdseed under the feeders, since robins and blackbirds are not good at hanging off the feeders like the tits are. | | | Re: Robins at birdfeeder Hi Karen and thanks for the advice. I'm just off to get some mealworms and will try the raisin thing too. I forgot to say in my first post that I think I identified a couple of bullfinches too, so I have a good variety of birds to see.

| | Re: Robins at birdfeeder Hi Dunkeld and I do realise I am extremely lucky in work location and can't wait for the summer when the wildflower meadow (which was seeded in 2010) becomes established and comes into flower. Hoping for that to attract butterflies too, so will be doubly lucky if the deer appear again also. The only downside is that I can see passing vehicles as our location is at the bottom of the incline for an exit sliproad on a main motorway but at least this provides a good wooded area for the wildlife

| | | Re: Robins at birdfeeder I'm so sad because I've had to remove my birdfeeder at work as it was attracting rats and the powers that be decided that was a health hazard. Now I don't see the great tits, blue tits, 2 robins, thrushes, blackbirds from my office window anymore - just the local motorway sliproad. Such a shame.
I don't have any problem with the feeders at home but maybe that's because I have 2 dogs. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
