| | | Blackbird and Sultanars I Have been putting out some Sultanas on a saucer for over a month now.The Blackbird is enjoying them and I put a handful out everyday and by night they are gone. He wont let anything Near his Sultanas, even Sparrows that are looking for seed on the ground he runs round with his head down driving them away.If another Blackbird tries to get at his Sultanas he drives her away right sharpish.

But now that I realize it is just a spelling mistake, I can agree that I also put sultanas out, and that the dominant blackbirds try to frighten others away. To make sure the others have a chance I sprinkle the sultanas around the lawn and under the bushes, so they are less concentrated and more birds can get at them. I've also been mixing the sultanas with some generic bird food, and adding a handful of dried mealworms every now and then. |

| | | Re: Blackbird and Sultanars Sultanas and raisans go down well with my blackbirds as long as they are sprinkled on the floor and under trees and shrubs where they tend to forage. Fun to watch the blackbird chasing the starlings off the mealworms I throw on the lawn everyday, the blackbird usually wins!

| | | Re: Blackbird and Sultanars I also scatter them on the lawn, and they're generally shared by the less dominant blackbirds..
Why? Well, it's because I have an apple tree at the back of the garden with loads of fallen apples, which the dominant blackbirds defend. They're quite happy to sit eating away at the apples, completely unaware of the sweeter snacks available on the lawn. I'm amazed they don't get curious when they see the other blackbirds eating from the grass Quote:

If they find them - they're gone |

If they find them - they're gone | For some reason, my blackbirds seem quite uninterested in the half apples I put out for them this year. Maybe it is the warmer winter, meaning there is more food generally available, or perhaps I am chucking more sultanas around... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
