| | | What goose? Revising my photos from the other day I came across this distant shot. Can anybody ID the goose on the left? I didn't crop the Canada just for size comparison. The goose was with a flock of Canada.

| | | Re: What goose? It looks like a hybrid to me, involving a Canada Goose and possibly a White-fronted Goose. The result certainly has WFG about its appearance. A pure WFG would have a horizontal white line down its flank and be much greyer in appearance. The head doesn't look right either. Compare the two in the pic and you will see their back ends look very similar, which they shouldn't.
Cheers,
Adam

| | | Re: What goose? My first thought also was a hybrid but I don't see much resemblance to Canada. I guess I'll leave it as unidentified until I can get better shots. Thank you Shrike and Adam.

| | Re: What goose? albifrons[/I]are generally more even coloured than flavirostris and juvs do not always show white stripe. bill colour normally separates the two but this one is ??
so take your pick.
I'd still go for whitefront, but what do I know? (less and less as i see more and more). I do know birds don't read books.

| | | Re: What goose? This is a hybrid between a Canada Goose and a grey goose ( anser) species, and despite the appearance of the goose in question it is almost certainly a Canada x Greylag Goose hybrid.
These often show features that aren't found on either parent (including white at the base of the bill and around the eye, and sometimes dark markings on the undertail coverts). See the examples here.

| | | Re: What goose? I think it is too small for a Canada x Greylag, which tend to have a very distinctive appearance too.
