| | | New feeding station seems to be a hit So I was in B&M bargains getting some black sunflower seeds and spotted one of those feeder pole contraptions for a tenner so though what the hey? I wanted to tidy up my feeders anyways. Plus I thought if it looks rubbish when set up I'll just not use it. Set it up last night and was quite happy with how it looked though it was a bit wobbly (because of my rubbish landfill garden soil though) so I fed it through my cage fatball feeder for added stability. I didnt use the water bowl cos I already have a large on in the garden and no doubt they would just spill stuff and poop in it. I hung a nyjer feeder and two feeders containing mostly black sunflower seeds and some hearts. I positioned the seed tray pretty much at ground level for birds that way inclined and filled with mixed seed. I expected it would take the birds a few days to get used to it but no, when I looked out this morning it was swarming with birds. Mostly goldfinches and siskins but also a greenfinch, a bullfinch (using a feeder which I've never seen them do), chaffinches, house sparrows, various tits and a robin on the ground feeder part...they were queuing up for breakfast (well it was nearly lunchtime by the time I surfaced).
Here's a wee pic with some siskins and goldfinches using it. |

| | | Re: New feeding station seems to be a hit Hi,
I have a similar feeder which has also been a hit, even though I am classed as inner city. However, this year it has not gone so well. For a start a squirrel chewed off one of the feeders, dragged it over the garden and it subsequently disappeared (the feeder, but then so has the squirrel too) after it also ate every scrap on the fatball feeder. I now have a squirrel proof feeder hanging but the birds are shy of it. I have a pic of the squirrel hanging upside down on the fat ball circular cage but do not know how to add it. My next task will be to work it out.
I also have trouble with A rat that helps itself to anything it can find and I no longer put out suet blocks. A neighbour has been told NOT to feed the birds because of the rat problem, and she now has a cat (which plays with the toads) and does of course scare away the birds.
Last week a large 'old' looking fox popped over the 6ft wall and I watched it prowl around before going back the way it came. A lot going on in my city garden! |

| | | Re: New feeding station seems to be a hit I have a feeder pole which I use in the back garden, but I must say the birds seem to prefer the front garden feeder, which is actually a small walnut tree which I keep pruned... It makes a perfect feeding station, and I think is easier for the birds to use than the poles. But of course, if you haven't got an appropriate tree to use, then the poles are a good substitute! |
