News about the Rotherham and Dearne Valley areas - Warning after eagle tries to snatch South Yorkshire pet

It made todays Mirror so it must be true

Not sure if ones ever been spotted in South Yorkshire but we aren't exactly overrun with them - especially Golden Eagles with a MASSIVE 1 Metre wingspan

Maybe it was the golden eagle that I saw in Sheffield sat on my neighbours chimney for a few minutes, a few years ago. That one was definitely an escape bird, had the leather jesse still attached. My bet would be that it is an escaped one. Probably thought these people were kindly providing its dinner.

(It was fun watching a magpie bravely mobbing that eagle - it did look very small by comparison. So did the chimney stack. And I was rather hoping the eagle would go for another neighbour's cat that was wandering down the street completely oblivious to the birds presence.)

(They obviously know their birds - It was too big for a Kestrel)

They obviously hadn't realised they should have described the wingspan as being as big as a barn door ...

Now if they'd been searching Wikipedia (and looked at white tailed eagle) then this would have made for an even better headline

if it was a golden eagle, i dont think that, if it had got its talons in the jack russell, it would have let it go, do you.rossy.

Yes, definitely an eagle if it had that big a wing span!

The local Buzzards will be worried about the presence of a raptor so much...err.....'bigger' than them!

If the described behaviour is even vaguely accurate it sounds like an escaped falconers bird of some sort.

If it did get a good grip of the dog to lift it off the ground, there will be marks on the dog to prove it, surely?

Was a golden eagle see over north Yorkshire (Dalby forest) a few years ago. Plus we get the odd sea eagle on the coast.
