Thanks for all your informative replies, I've looked at redd bunting pictures and the bib does look like a 'V' shape and the 'chin strap' is an elongated triangle.

My bird's bib was level at the bottom and the chinstrap was parallel, I'm a bit 'narrow sighted ' when it comes to birds and I should be aware that small variations can occur. But what is a reed bunting doing in North Wiltshire? Cheers, Tony.

The Reed Buntings are going through the moult into they're breeding plumage at the moment so the face pattern can be a little variable , they are a widespread bird frequenting reeds , farmland and most areas of rough ground as well as wetlands or estuaries , and getting common in places. They often visit birdtables at feeding stations so i could easily imagine them visiting birdtables if suitable habitat for them is anywhere nearby.

i forgot that i read in the sunday paper ,that the it was a brown spanish sparrow ,and it is in the WILTSHIRE area, now thats where you live isnt it ? rossy.

Last I heard that was in the Calshot area in Hampshire, though it may move around.

...where it's much more likely to be a Reed Bunting! There are plenty in North Wiltshire - at the Cotswold Water Park for a start!
