Spot the Pheasant

On the way back from the woods this morning, I heard a cock pheasant calling, I looked every where I could think of. I found him in the end, up a tree.

At least you've managed a passable photo of the beggar. I've been trying for ages to get a half decent shot of a cock pheasant

Thanks Jack, picture was taken at 130pm today, I didn't expect to find a pheasant up a tree at this time of day. The light was very poor, so pic did turn out that good. + hand held at 35x zoom.

It is weird. I remember flushing some from the trees local to me, just didn't expect it at all! Maybe they roost there? And at 1:30, maybe yours were having a siesta??

On the contrary Nige, he was shouting his head off for ages. The funny thing was, it sounded like it was coming from somewhere on the ground. I think he might have been taking the mick

It is usual for Pheasants to roost in trees (though I guess that they are also prepared to roost on the ground - they are sometimes found in areas with very few trees!).

Perhaps one "in a tree & shouting it's head off" early in the afternoon was there because there was a ground based predator lurking unseen somewhere nearby, a fox or domestic cat perhaps?

If a Pheasant is up a tree during the day its a good chance a Fox has just passed, especially if he was shouting, another classic sign. Seen this a few times. Good shot Alan

The pigeons in the top of the tree are showing signs of concern, too. This could be due to Acipiter with a camera below though!

That did cross my mind, Roy, Alan, He is one of the last survivors of the shoots, maybe he is just a tad sensitive too
