My fat balls are caged too. Might give dripping a try on your recommendation. Would make home-made cost effective.

OK, so I have tried a couple of things today. First I soaked the mealworms with some sultanas for 30 mins before putting them out. The blackbirds went CRAZY over them, so that was a big success.

Then I put my homemade fat and seed mixture (fat collected off the top of beef stock, mixed with cheap all-purpose bird feed) into a saucer, and once it had hardened left it outside. An hour later the saucer was completely clean. I was absolutely thrilled at my 100% success rate with home-made bird recipes - until I realised that actually the dog had eaten it...

Lesson learned - if the bird food contains beef fat, put it up somewhere high where the greedy Labrador can't reach it...
