| | | Birding 2012 Year List! As my 2011 Year List thread was such a surprising success & by popular request, I've started one for 2012. Congratulations to Dogghound for being 'Top Birder' in 2011!
Commiserations to Adam for coming 2nd. (I know how much he wanted to win!)
You can have a cake too!
I'm hoping to improve on my count for the coming year & will make a concerted effort to get out & about more!
General rules are that the birds have to be wild, in this country. ie:- not escapees, birds in captivity or hybrids etc.
If anyone would like suggest any others, please feel free to add them!
Good luck to you all & Happy Birding!

I think it would be a good idea for people to only use one particular listing system. My personal suggestion is everyone sticks to the BOU official list as found here; The British List: THE BRITISH LIST (15 Dec 11) http://www.bou.org.uk/thebritishlist...%2008%2031.pdf
rather than complicating things with some people maybe using the UK400 list.
That way, everyone is on a level playing field so to speak.
Just an idea Quote:

Cheers,

For the record, my list is of birds that interest me; this excludes feral species like feral pigeon and greylag, but includes naturalised species like Mandarin, and races and subspecies that can be identified in the field. This may be idiosyncratic, but I'm not trying to compete with anybody (no point anyway ).
As far as I'm concerned, it's just a bit of fun. If anybody wants to make it a competition, that's fine by me, but don't include me in it.
Happy New Year

| | | Re: Birding 2012 Year List! I've made this thread a sticky!
It is just a bit of fun and there are no prizes so we can be fairly relaxed about any rules. I'm happy to go with the BOU list for this thread but may include others on a personal list, e.g. I included black swan living wild at Strumpshaw Fen on my personal 2011 list but not in the 172 I claimed on WAB.

| | | Re: Birding 2012 Year List! BOU list is the way forward for sure.
The UK400 lists founder and his motives for allowing and disallowing certain birds does somewhat discredit it
One suggestion I will make is that we only list some highlights for the first few days or 50 birds, otherwise we will have lots of long list posts with the same common birds. What do you folks reckon |

| | | Re: Birding 2012 Year List! like Tursiops says we can all keep our own personal records however we choose , for this list the official BOU list sounds the best and the link has been added already on page 1 for reference. Good luck to everyone involved and hope we all have a great years birding |

Happy New Year
T2 | I don't think that anyone sees this as especially competitive, but there were clearly some friendly 'rivalries' going on within last years thread. The important think for any one who wishes to take part in 2012 to remember is that the only person that you are really competing against (if anyone at all) is yourself. It can be fun to set yourself a target, which will usually be something that is realistic - but not too easy, and see how close you can get. No-one who is relatively new to birdwatching, doesn't live near the coast, and doesn't travel much during the year, can realistically expect to end the year with anything like the number of species seen by an experienced birdwatcher who travels widely during the year - but that doesn't stop them enjoying making their own year list!
...and a happy (and productive) new year to all!
