Re: Birding 2012 Year List!

Got a red kite (113) today, over the A1, near Wetherby, whilst on my way to Fountains Abbey. It's good there.

Re: Birding 2012 Year List!

Adam & I went down to Pagham today, ahead of the forecast rain.
The nicest, cheshire grin part of the morning for me, was when several hundred Brent Geese came in low over head, chatting away, as they do.
I couldn'y help but have the music in my head used in Earthflight, for the aerial shots, as they flew over!
We had hoped to see the Paddyfield Warbler but it was a no show!
Only picked up 2 new ones for the year there:-

143. Pintail (life tick)
144. Water Rail (life tick)

We are now holed up in The Ship Inn at Rye and had a scrummy dinner!
Lovely place, circa 1500's!

Hoping for a better day tomorrow, will be going to:-
Pett Levels
Dungeness Beach
Scotney GP
Dungeness RSPB

(life list [number] and yes, that does say golden plover!!! I should get out more!)

The number to beat from last year is 103, and the rarity to beat is Wilson's Phalarope. Missed an opportunity to see Ross's Gull at Ardglass, alass, but the Iceland was great. I see some people are in the 140s already!

Re: Birding 2012 Year List!

Had a trip to Dungeness today. Started in ARC pits where as I approached the hide I sawa big white heron sized bird with black feet and legs - hecked with those inside the hide (and saw it clearly again later):

82: great white egret (lifer!)

Also in the hide
83: shelduck
84: goldeneye
85: smew

I missed a bittern fly back in near the hide. doh!

Went down to the visitor centre and saw on the sign that tree sparrows were about, then saw a sparrow fly over, looked at the brown head when it landed near the feeder:

86: tree sparrow

The rest of the reserve was pretty disappointing. I had been told in the Arc hide there were 2 or 3 GW egrets on the reserve often coming close but there was very little at all. No bitterns, long tailed duck or goosanders too be seen and I walked within a few metres of a woodcock which took off as I looked the other way! Still I got one for the year list:

87: Great crested grebe.

So after a quick stop back at the ARC hide (with a brief good if distant view of a GW egret) off to the lighthouse. From beach I saw:

88: gulliemots
89: gannets
90: kittiwakes

Not a bad day, but RSPB Dungeness reserve was disappointing.
