| | Biggest bird of prey I've ever seen... While out walking the dog in Skelmersdale, Lancs this morning we saw a truly enormous bird of prey sitting about 50 feet away on a fence post. Couldn't get a shot of it as it flew off before we could scrabble for our phones! It was about 2' tall, very wide around, mid-brown, and had a huge wingspan when it took off. I wish I could have had a better look at it as I've never seen a bird as big as that in this part of the world. Any ideas what it could have been? Thanks in advance! |

| | | Re: Biggest bird of prey I've ever seen... About 2' tall would make it Buzzard sized (which is by far the most likely species given the location and the rest of the description).
Welcome to WAB by the way!

| | | Re: Biggest bird of prey I've ever seen... Thank you! I did wonder if it was a buzzard, but I used to see them a lot in Bickerstaffe and they didn't look this large. Still, it is the most likely candidate! |

| | | Re: Biggest bird of prey I've ever seen... welcome to WAB A large, broad bird, often seen circling high in the sky on thermals. Buzzards can also be spotted perching on telephone poles and fence posts. from your id i would say a buzard

| | | Re: Biggest bird of prey I've ever seen... If ,as you reckon having seen buzzards previously, the bird you saw just MIGHT have been a sea eagle they are great wanderers. It is not impossible you know. The thing is, the wingspan is around eight feet in width ! |

Buzzard for me too - they are quite variable in size: some look huge while others manage to appear quite small. Also frequently seen on top of fence posts, telegraph poles and in trees. A remote (but imo less remote than the sea eagle suggestion!) possibility is some escaped falconer's bird...

| | Re: Biggest bird of prey I've ever seen... Many thanks to everyone who has helped me out with this question. Pretty sure it was a buzzard, but I'm intigued about the sea eagle theory so I'm off to check it out! Happy New Year to all | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
