Puffins tend to stay out a sea when they are not breeding, which means that they are the scarcest auk species recorded in many counties, even though Guillemots, Razorbils, and even Little Auks may be seen regularly close in shore during the winter.
When they are seen close to the shore, and especially when they end up inland, it is usually a sign that they aren't in good condition. As for where this one was going to, or from, it's really not possible to say. It could have come from a colony on the Channel coast, or a north sea colony from which it was heading west along the channel, or from a west coast colony and only came into the Channel after becoming unwell. It might not even have been in the Channel before heading inland - it could have come from the Bristol Channel, or even flown across land from the Wash!
