| | | Female Chaffinch with leg problem. She has been coming to the garden quite frequently and at first we noticed that she spent most of her time perching on one leg. She only seems to use the damaged leg for extra push during take-off. It doesn't look like an injury so it could either be a complex growth or she has had it from hatching. Fortunately her flight and feeding are unimpaired. |

We used to see a seagull with only one leg, (the other was completely missing) who successfully lived for a number of years, nesting on the roof of the house opposite.

| | | Re: Female Chaffinch with leg problem. I had a male Chaffinch with the same thing as yours, I felt really sorry for him but he still seemed to do all the same as the other Chaffinches, except that he sat down when he was feeding rather than standing up. He stopped coming after a while, so perhaps he got eaten, but I don't know. It's a shame to see them like that, but it doesn't seem to affect them too much.

| | | Re: Female Chaffinch with leg problem. Same here - we had a female chaffinch we called Peaky - she always seemed to have her crest feathers raised. She had a swollen foot for about two years and she raised at least three years of chicks that we know of and so didn't seem any of the worse for it. Not a pleasant sight though.

| | | Re: Female Chaffinch with leg problem. Oh dear, that sounds sad. Perhaps it may be an idea to stop feeding for a while to disperse the birds so that others don't become infected. I know that sounds harsh on the poorly ones but it may be best for the healthy ones. Then perhaps a good old disinfectant on the feeding station and leave redundant for a while. Very sad. You have my sympathies.
