| | | NFU president: no bio-diversity crisis The NFU President has been spouting gibberish again, apparently there is no biodiversity crisis in the UK on farmland and the government is wasting money on environmental schemes when it should be giving farmers money to increase productivity (and make even more money!) Quote: |
The point is we haven’t got a bio-diversity crisis in this country. Most of the key environmental indicators have been moving in the right direction and almost 70 per cent of farmland is covered by an agri-environment scheme.

So the 70% of farms have some sort of agri-environment scheme which means everything is great then. I spose the massive decline in yellowhammers and skylarks etc simply doesn't count. |

| | | Re: NFU president: no bio-diversity crisis From what I understand only 1 farmland bird species has shown any significant increases due to set aside. Hardly a shining example biodiversity success. Perhaps the present should speak to the Duke of Norfolk and his estate team in Sussex where they have made hugely significant improvements to the farmland for the benefit of wildlife. This year alone 13 species of raptor have been recorded and the number of Grey Partridge there (all wild stock) has to be seen to be believed.
Cheers,

| | | Re: NFU president: no bio-diversity crisis It's not what you do, but the way that you do it. At least that was the take-home message of a programme I watched on this subject. Well done to the Duke of Norfolk and the other folk that have done something worthwhile.
I think a little more intelligence is called for.
