| | | Re: Just look at these eyes Ty guys, Dogghound I actually didnt know that. Your depth of knowledge never ceases to amaze me. I will have to look through all my photos to see how many different hawks visit. Yesterday it was non stop with 6 visits in a short period. This Male was lining up a Jay believe it or not and only just missed it seconds later. Up until now I thought I had a mature Male and Female visiting and an immature Male and Female. Perhaps I can establish if there are more? How many different ages can you tell through plumage and the eys mate? This is very interesting. Here is the first Winter Male from yesterday. I assume its a Male as a first Winter Female came in the other day and it was visibly larger and bulkier than this bird. Fascinating stuff.

| | | Re: Just look at these eyes In the field you can do Adult Male/female, 1st winter male/female and 2nd winter male/female.
Here is a classic 2nd winter male.
He has darker eyes than your bird. Note the two generations of feathers juvenile and adult. They are quite clear on males. In females they are noticeably different but less distinct. |

Although from my experience eye colour is about 95% reliable.
With olive/yellow/grey in juvs.
Yellow 1st winters
yellow/orange 2nd winters
yellow/Orange to red in adults
Very old birds with black specks in the eye and a black ring around the iris.
