Head shots

Being a little bored this afternoon as I am housebound at the moment due to a back problem I thought I would try my hand at some head shots of the Collared Doves that visit my garden on a regular basis. I love the colour of the eyes on these birds so tried in particular to show the eye at it's best although a little more direct sunlight on the eye would probably have helped a little.
However I was fairly pleased with what I managed so thought I would share them with you.
Roger

Re: Head shots

excellent Roger, you can count the feathers on these. The eye colour and detail is also very nice. Were these taken with the Bigma or the 400mm?

Thanks Matt, they were with the Bigma. I wanted to get as close in on them as I could whilst sat on my chair just inside the front door and the 400mm is just that touch short for this.

Re: Head shots

Good shots- never really noticed the blood red eyes before! As they're one of my commoner visitors I'll scrutinise them tomorrow.

One thing I did notice aeshna5 was that only one of the pair had the really blood red eyes. The eyes on the other one were a more browny red. Don't know if this a sign of what sex they are or was just coincidental, because apart from that they looked identical to me.

What great detailed images - excelent Ollie. I hope your back pain has started to ease now and you'll soon be mobile again, so frustrating for you.

Thanks for the comments, things are easier, the pain in now manageable thanks, but oh how frustrating it is not to be able to get out and about on my local patches in this lovely bright weather.

Re: Head shots

Wow nice work!! I really need to sxtart thinking about investing in some serious camera gear once again, Im getting no where with my fz30 its not very user friendly in my book but in all fairness i havent read the manual ( dont normally need to )
Im still getting better results with my old ancient konica point and shoot digital.

Re: Head shots

Thanks Dan hope it all comes together for you, but reading the manual might be a good thing. I always carry a pocket guide to my camera around with me just in case I accidently alter a setting and can't work out how to get it back.

Re: Head shots

Just another head shot of a Collared Dove. Couldn't resist posting this one as he/she was actually listening to the shutter click on the camera as I was taking them. This one was taken with the Canon 400mm f5.6L USM lens 1/200 @f9.0

Re: Head shots

Wonderful shots! I spent half an hour taking photos of a Geese heads today and they all came out lousy: whites over exposed and blacks were brown. Makes me even more impressed with your wonderful shots.

Thank you Kerry, when taking photos of anything with a lot of white you need to set the camera to under expose. I underexpose whites by a full stop, that's usually depending on your camera three marks on the display, each mark being 1/3rd of a stop.

Hi badgerwatcher, the Bigma is a nickname commonly used for the Sigma 50 -500mm zoom lens. It's a prety big heavy lens hence the name Bigma. If you are interested here is a link to a page on my website that shows a decent photograph of it Equipment used by Lincsbirder.co.uk

Re: Head shots

Lovely shots, Ollie. And glad your back is improving.

I must go and look a the collared doves that visit my bird table more closely, as I'd not realised either just how very red the eye is. And I know they are a pair, though I don't know which is which, so I'll see if there is any difference in eye colour.

Re: Head shots

Oh, thanks Roger. I see there's a whole new world I need to explore!
No wonder you've got a bad back!
But I now don't feel so bad that my photos are so vastly inferior to yours, as I see it is a different game entirely.
Trouble is now, I want one!
Hope your back is still improving.
