No need for confusion, I was responding to the phrase that I bolded in your quote; "in some cases still alive". That suggests that the prey is often not "still alive" while being eaten; which isn't what I observe, quite the opposite.

As a general rule I try to never say anything is definitive, as invariably not all birds will still be alive when eaten. Although I agree most are.
