The bird to the left is a cormorant in juvenile plumage, the bird to the right is an adult cormorant in non-breeding plumage undergoing wing moult.

| | | Re: Cormorant or Shag?? Shag's are quite dainty in comparison to cormorants and are smaller, with a thin neck. The face is also different, cormorants show more skin around the edge of the bill the eye is also within this skin. In shags this is greatly reduced to just around the bill, also feathers surround the eye. Cormorants show a distinctively hooked bill, in shag its less noticable.
Also it looks like the photo is inland? shags do sometimes occur away from the sea but far less so than cormorants. |

Yes the photos were taken inland on the River Wear @ Durham city (Beautiful place)
