| | | Cetti's Warbler A cetti's warbler was seen and heard in the grounds of Ingleborough Hall at Clapham, North Yorkshire, for two days at the start of this week, presumably just passing through. |

| | | Re: Cetti's Warbler That's a good record. That locality seems pretty atypical for Cetti's as I recall.

| | | Re: Cetti's Warbler I've heard their explosive call but never seen one. That was at leighton moss on the causeway just past the public hide.
I thought these where resident warblers but according to the rspb handbook on british birds they migrate.? |

| | | Re: Cetti's Warbler i'm not sure about their migration habits, i thought they were resident though. the population in nottinghamshire has slowly been increasing over the last few years. 6 pairs bred at attenborough nature reserve this year alone, i've heard 2-3 separate birds calling on most visits this year, the place is crawling with them!

| | | Re: Cetti's Warbler They usually are fairly sedentary, particularly breeding birds. However 1st winter birds usually disperse in a northerly direction, which most likely explains the one in North Yorkshire. There is still some movement of birds in Britain into Europe and visa versa, particularly birds along the south coast. |

| | | Re: Cetti's Warbler ChrisJB, Ingleborough, the mountain, may be atypical, but Ingleborough Hall in nearby Clapham is surrounded by woods, a lake, lawns and lots of shrubby areas. It was in the shrubby areas where the Cetti's warbler was seen and heard. Alas, it seems to have moved on - no more sightings now for four days. |

Some types of 'shrubby areas' are used, typically only when they are along the edges of the lakes, and usually associated with at least some marsh/reedbed areas though. The sort of shrubby areas typically found in the grounds of 'halls' only very exceptionally fit the typical habitat choice of Cetti's Warblers.
They obviously disperse from breeding sites though, and when doing so frequently turn up in atypical habitat (where they sometimes stay for a few days before moving on).
