Talking First shot's of a Heron :-)

After a morning spent trying to photograph the little Grebe in my area I gave up after a few hours and went for walk. I am glad I did as I got to photograph my first Heron. The pics have had a slight crop. But im well chuffed with them.

I hope to catch a pair soon as last year they were catching eels and I did not have a decent camera then so I missed out. But fingers crossed for this summer.

Take care

Harmau Ian

And so you should be chuffed. They're beautiful shots. Very well done.

Lovely shots, well done! There's plenty of detail there, plus you got the exposure just about spot on, which isn't always easy with Herons.

Re: First shot's of a Heron :-)

Thanks guys

Im still trying to wok out if the uncropped versions are better they show the Heron in its more natural environment, Its a difficult choice.

As for the Grebe they keep eveading me. I will get a decent shot soon. The shots I managed to get were during the week as I was walking the kids and dog so the shots I got are a bit poor! not making excuses but a two year old and a teething six month old are not ideal companions for taking pics lol.

Thanks take care

Ian Harimau

Ps thanks Aeshna a lovely compliment

Hi

I know what you're saying but I fing that tree trunk a bit distracting , so personally I prefer the cropped version.

Re: First shot's of a Heron :-)

I love your herons. It is always a quandary on how much to crop. At the same time, we want to show as much bird detail as possible plus something of the surroundings. If in doubt, I crop for detail and keep the original; that is with JPEG. With RAW, it is not a problem.

Re: First shot's of a Heron :-)

Great shots of the Heron Ian, and I definitely prefer the cropped version. It's all a matter of taste, but as the main subject is the Heron I prefer to see the Heron dominating the photograph and the detail on the Heron shown up, particularly the eye, as it does in the cropped version.

Ian, excellent shots, I prefer the cropped ones for the purpose of ashot of a heron as it were. If you were presenting an illustrated talk then I suggest the uncropped shot would have it's place. I like them all!

Re: First shot's of a Heron :-)

Wonderful pix Ian, I am very envious. I spent some time last year taking pix of 5+ heron on the local riverbank... not one was worth keeping. Well done!

Re: First shot's of a Heron :-)

Hi Harimau, beautiful Heron shots. Our friendly Robin seems to have disappeared in the last month. Do male Robins nest? Could there be another reason. He used to come for walks with us and stay close when we were gardening. Regards Blackdown
