Thanks Dogghound - next time I see a SEO, which unfortunately isn't very often, I'll try and take a close look.

I think that most ringers (at least the ones I know) try always try and determine sex and age - and it's something that 'regular'' birders are increasingly trying to do. For some trickier identifications it is an important first step - so it is useful to get in some practise whenever possible (as well as being interesting!).
