| | | Found A Wood Pigeon In My Garden Found a young wood pigeon in my garden today, it was actually looking through the glass of the patio doors, i went out to it and it ran away from me, it didn't attempt to fly, i caught it and gave it a look over and it doesn't appear to be injuredl, i left it some corn and it's eating well by itself but i have seen no sign of it's parents, one wood pigeon came down and just ignored the youngster, plus i am sure the young one would have ran over to it if it was one of it's parents, i don't know what to do with it now, it's in my conservatory at the moment, it's been fed and watered but i can't leave it out in our garden as our cat will have it for dinner. Any advice anyone?
By the way, i am in kingswinford if anyone can help. |

Presumably it is mobile enough to have found its way into your garden in the first place so I assume it will be mobile enough to find its way out eventually. Young woodpigeons are a bit slow to react sometimes, and it may not yet be a very strong flyer if it is young.
If it does not appear injured in any way I would respectfully suggest keeping your cat out of the way until the pigeon goes on its way, or relocating the pigeon elsewhere.
Cheers. Nik.

| | | Re: Found A Wood Pigeon In My Garden Hi, thanks, we have a large pine at the bottom of our garden and have a regular pair of wood pigeons that came every day and were nesting in the pine tree, my first thought was that it had fallen from that tree but i then realised i have not seen them in that tree for a while now and also the male of the pair came down today for the first time in ages and it ignored the youngster, this male by the way has only one eye, thats how i know it's the same one. But this youngster deffinetly can't fly, and i would gladly keep our cat in but other cats roam our garden at night too. |

| | | Re: Found A Wood Pigeon In My Garden Young woodies often leave the nest early, when they have little or no fear of danger, and even less flying ability! However, they do stick around with their parents for quite a while, so the longer you keep it in, the less likely the parents will return and encourage it to move away somewhere safer. If you have trees in the garden, I would put it up as high as you can reach, and leave it to do its own thing.
Whilst it is always good to try to help a bird which is not able to fend for itself, the fact that this one is eating on its own, suggests it is old enough to manage, so better to put it back outside and let the parents care for it. You could put it out in a tree now, under cover of darkness, and by first light it should go on its way. |

| | | Re: Found A Wood Pigeon In My Garden seen this happen many times with woodies, in some cases the parents nudge them if you get what i mean, or jump at them, similar to what collard doves do, if you have ever observed them, looks like your going to be playing mum, good luck, and keep us informed on the outcome. rossy. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
