Odd crow behaviour

My neighbour described how every year crows descend on her walnut tree to take the nuts leaving the empty shells below.
Several years ago, her son killed one of the thieving crows, and as country men still do, hung it up in the tree to deter others. Not long afterwards she described how the meadow next to the garden became black with crows. Each crow was standing upright with its head bowed down as if in prayer.
I have heard that crows are intelligent birds and of crow courts being observed. Explanations, or is this just another of life's little mysteries?

Could be their Mobbing behaviour, but as no predator is present they're just congregating, not really sure.
