| | | Baby collared dove this afternoon I found a baby collared dove on my garden table , it had fallen out of its nest.It is very small, cannot fly, so I put it into the tree, on a big branch stump that had been sawn off at some time. I could not reach the nest.
Both parents are coming to it all the time and feeding it.
How long before it will fly and will it survive, does anyone know? |

| | | Re: Baby collared dove Hi, welcome to WAB. Can't tell how long it will be before it flies as we don't know how old it is. You did the right thing by putting it back in the tree for the parents to look after it. As you have observed its parents feeding it all should be well. |

| | | Re: Baby collared dove If the bird is uninjured and has some feathers, put it in the nearest tree. The parents have no sense of smell and will not know it's been touched. If it can't perch and has fallen out of the nest, put it up in the tree in a berry basket or a woven basket so water will drain out. Parents WILL feed it after people leave.
If the bird runs around, is chick-like (covered with short, fuzzy down), it may be a baby quail or killdeer. These birds nest on the ground, and the parents' fly off when people come near. Leave the immediate area and watch to see if a parent will come back (you may have to wait up to an hour).
The bird needs help and should be picked up if: the parents are dead; the bird is newly hatched and the nest and nest mates are out of reach; the bird fell from a palm tree; it has an injury; a cat or a child has brought it in from places unknown.
If the bird is injured, or has no feathers, it is most important to get it warm. Use a heating pad on low or a light source (low wattage). Fractures need to be set within 48 hours or they heal incorrectly and get infected. |

It was a Collared Dove, on his garden table. Pretty unlikely to be a Quail, and most definitely not a Killdeer. The parents are feeding it, so they're unlikely to be dead. In my opinion of course. |

| | | Re: Baby collared dove I wouldnt leave it on the stump, although Dove nests are rather flimsy I would fix some kind of small basket and put it inside that. Even fix a basket securely onto the stump.

| | | Re: Baby collared dove The baby collared dove is still in the tree, alive and well!
Parents are feeding it and it has started moving around the branches a little bit,but not much.
The cold weather is coming, but its a semi evergreen tree, some sort of pine, so it will keep some cover.
Yesterday we scared a cat away,it was starting to climb the tree!
The birds parents have chased away Jays a few times. Hard work being bird parents!

| | | Re: Baby collared dove Well done. As long as you and the parents are vigilant it looks like the baby will be fine. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
