help to id flock of birds..

now i've been birding for a long time but saw a large flock of birds today flying very high in a v formation.. one small flock of about 10 and a large one of about 40 or 50 birds... they def weren't geese as they were quite slender... and i read that cormorants fly in a v but they didn't look right for them... the shape made me think of a gannets but i was unsure if they fly so far inland... but that was def the type of shape... its bugging me coz i can usually id pretty much anything i see but this has me stumped....

Not likely to be a large flock of Gannets inland though occasional individuals are seen inland.

Could they have been large gulls which sometimes fly in loose Vs?

Did you get an idea of colour? Could be any species of goose, or as aeshna says maybe gulls. I take it they weren't large enough for swans?

def not geese or swans.. i'm going with gulls.. just never seen so many flying in a v before...
