A good photographer and a good twitcher the majority of the time wont disturb their subject. Inexperienced ones will most likely be the worst offenders. Of course like every thing in life there are always exceptions to the rule.

I have been in hides with lots of photographers before and they have all been nice guys who are there to see the wildlife aswell as photograph it. It is unfair to criticise people who may also be there for the enjoyment of nature too. |

In my experience the only time that photographers are really a problem in public access hides (including those on reserves) is when they hog the available space, as mentioned earlier in this thread. Spending perhaps an hour or two in a hide is fair (if the hide is not exceptionally busy), but if photographers want to spend all day, perhaps even several days, in a hide (which can be necessary to get the best shots) this can understandably be seen as unfair on others who are trying to use the hide and may not be able to because of a lack of space.
Of course, the same can be said of other users of the hide - they can sometimes be just as guilty of hogging space (eg. people eating lunch in busy hides - and not even keeping watch while doing so!).

Had you replied with "Rather than being a lucrative market, it's actually very difficult to make any real money from wildlife photography" (or similar), I doubt that there would have been any objection. Not everyone knows that selling photos doesn't make much money.
