Robin eating from feeder!

This morning for the first time ever I noticed a Robin eating from a seed feeder. The feeder contained the High energy no mess food. I just checked on the thread "which birds visit your feeder" to see if other members had noticed this but it wasn't mentioned.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

I occasionally get a robin along taking a sunflower heart from the feeders, but it isn't a regular thing.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

Quite often I see a robin or dunnock nosing about in the feeder but I'm not sure that they manage to get anything to eat - they possibly feed on 'crumbs' of peanut?

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

In my last garden I Nailed one of those coconut shells with the lard and nuts in it to the top of one of my fence posts, which all the birds loved, when it was all gone I broughta very fine feed especially for Robins( from B&Q i think) and filled the shell up with it, the Robins loved it and became regular feeders, and as it was up high I had a good view of them, where as normally they just collected food dropped on the ground and I often missed them.
Will be doing the same again here as soon as we have replaced the fencing

Although Robins are generally ground feeders when it comes to feeding stations it is not uncommon to see them on feeders. I have quite often seen them hovering by, not landing on, feeders whilst extracting seed.

Cheers,

Adam

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

When I was down is Surrey the robins often used to fly onto the bird table and on to the tray I had up high on a pole feeder but never seen one on a seed feeder.
More and more birds seem to have cottened onto both the feeders and that us humans will put out food for them.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

The robins in my garden regularly land on my sunflower heart feeder and come most days. How unusual

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

A rather poor piccy of a Robin on a seed feeder. Please excuse the quality but it has been taken through the car windscreen.

I have never seen a Robin on a peanut feeder but they do like the different types of fat feeders and if they cannot perch on them then they will hover and take a beakfull.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

Robins regularly take sunflower hearts from my feeder, but unlike the finches + sparrows, tends not to stay perched, but takes a seed + then flies off with it + returning again. Occasionally see the Dunnock do this too.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

Yes, my Robin hangs on my seed feeder. It got so fed up with watching the tits gorge themselves that it decided to have a go itself.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

Robins eat from my fat blocks and hanging seed feeders too, as do female (but not male) blackbirds and female (but not male) chaffinches. I don't know why the males are reluctant, but they stick to the table or to foraging on the ground for the seed that gets spilled.

Re: Robin eating from feeder!

My robins do the same semi-hover while taking things from the feeder. It tends to depend on how busy the bird table is. Likewise, some of the blackbirds have become quite adept at hanging onto the feeders briefly when the tables is busy or their arch rival is there.
