Would this bird be in trouble or is it just resting on it's way to Africa - even then, it would be a very unusual place to rest and not exactly using it's cryptic plumage to it's full advantage.

Neil. | Like most migrants, Nightjars do turn up in odd places on migration. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's it trouble - but it may have ended up in the garden through being exhausted.

Quite something to find a nightjar in the garden. I think it would be in a considerable amount of danger though- mainly from the local cats. Even if it did stay perfectly still, a cat would sniff it out. Hope the poor thing made it away.

The grit tray was located about twenty yards away from one of the main paths (The Causeway) and, as it was a Saturday, the nightjar was seen by hundreds of people. The bird itself was in fine fettle apparently (I didn't see it myself) and flew around the reserve a few times before landing back on the grit tray. It stayed all day, only disappearing in the late afternoon. Why it chose such a public place to roost when the area is surrounded by thick woodland is anyone's guess!
