Will Red Kites take life mammals?

I though red kites ate carrion but I am told they also take life mammals is that true

Hi PhilA, welcome to WAB.
Most of the Red Kites diet is made up of carrion, though they would probably take small mammals or young birds if they came across them, plus worm and grubs.
I'm told they will take a small rabbit, but I once watched half a dozen Kites soaring very low over a field full of rabbits for over an hour, and the rabbits were totaly un-concerned.
Kites are what are called 'weak-footed', they are not built for grabbing and grasping large live mammals.

By and large they are carrion eaters, but will on occasion take small live mammals if they can.
