| | | Garden lists Just to day had a count up of all the birds I have ticked as a garden vistor to my garden ( I only count those that land in my garden or one of the birch trees growing in the garden ) and was surprised when the total came to 37, As my garden is not that big I do have a lot of feeders though I live on the edge of big urban estate but do have very large park close to me along with a small woodland trust wood, just wondering how many other WABERS keep garden lists.
I can not see me adding much more to my list though I do know of one bird that has visted but is not on list as I did not see it but a local birder got a photo of it on one of my fat feeders that was a LS Woodpecker.
Hope it comes back one day when I am in, and did have a fieldfare land in tree just out side my garden but it was spooked by mr sparrow hawk so did not come in to garden to feed.
My top two garden ticks are a raven in the birch tree, a pair breed on watertower not far from me. And my no1 are crossbills one male one female came for five day on run in last year cold snap feeding on sunflower hearts. MIKE |

| | | Re: Garden lists I will be doing that as I get going, (my birding only started late in Feb this year).
But like my Life List it will only include birds I have actually got a recognisable and decent photo of.
Indeed my embryo web site already mentions a section for Garden Birds, which is where my list will develop from. i.e , if it's a photo on that section of my web site then it's on my list.
One spin off for doing that is that there will never be any doubt as to what I've seen! Just as well with my appalling recognition skills.

| | | Re: Garden lists Hi! my list has 38, though it does not include my experience of birds, which is the sound of oyster catchers and curlew and tawny and barn owls (little owl is in my "put a foot in my garden " list). Overflyers include many more, including Kestrel Buzzard, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, mCanada and Brent geese, mallard, etc..
My best day ever was a fall of pied flycatchers, blackcap, warblers and goldcrest which shivered my birch tree a few years ago, second best day was the very snowy weather which saw me trapped ( ) at home whilst song thrush, redwing and fieldfare feasted on my ready offerings of apples. raisins, seed and suet. |

| | | Re: Garden lists I have an absolutely tiny back garden (can't be more than 10 ft by 10 ft) but since I started feeding the birds properly about Nov last year I have had quite a few good spots. As well as the commoner birds I have had:
Goldfinch
Bullfinch
Brambling
Greenfinch
LBBG
Herring gull (poor guy just could not work out how to get from the fence onto the hanging bird table)
GSW
Sparrowhawk
I also had the following in the trees and wasteground just behind my garden
Waxwing
Tawny Owl |

| | | Re: Garden lists My garden list stands at a paltry 9 , starling , house sparrow , blackbird , blue tit (one brief visit ) , pied wagtail , wood pigeon , collared dove , magpie , BH gull . My garden is about 30ftx30ft but in very urbanised area the only park nearby is a car-park. I'm gonna start on the niger seed and sunflower hearts next week and hope to attract a few more , has anybody else any ideas ? |

| | | Re: Garden lists Very interesting post, Mike.
I live about 6 miles, in a straight line, from London Liverpool Street station and I am very lucky in having no houses front or back of the house for about a quarter of a mile, but my garden list (ie on the ground in the garden or sitting on something that is growing out, or attached to, the garden) is not big -
House sparrow,
Great tit,
Blue tit,
Long tailed tit,
Greenfinch,
Goldfinch,
Chaffinch,
Dunnock,
Robin,
Wren,
Starling,
Carrion crow,
Magpie,
Jay,
Great spotted woodpecker,
Wood pigeon,
Heron,
Sparrowhawk,
Helmeted guinea fowl (only once about 20 years ago. They were lovely birds but ****ing destroyed my veg plot).
If I extend this to birds seen from the garden or those seen (or heard) in the trees and bushes over the back wall, then I can add -
Cormorant,
Mallard,
Canada goose,
Greylag goose,
Mute swan,
Buzzard,
Kestrel,
Black-headed gull,
Herring gull,
Tawny owl,
Swift,
Blackbird,
House martin,
Rose-ringed parakeet,
Green woodpecker,
Skylark,
Spotted flycatcher,
Song thrush,
Mistle thrush,
Chiffchaff (heard)
Willow warbler (heard)
Dave
