| | | It's official, the Peregrine is a sea bird!
Walking the dog today in Wareham Forest I was watching our resident pair of Peregrines. This has been a regular treat now for the last six years since we moved here.
Peregrines in Dorset have taken to using the National Grid pylons as a good perching and nesting site and they do a good job of reducing the pigeon population the evidence for this can be found scattered around the base of the pylon legs.
Anyhoo, today I came across an elderly chap festooned with bins and scopes plodding along the path. I pointed out to him the usual perching post for our beautiful falcons only to be told that it was total nonsense and impossible for Peregrine to be "inland".
They are apparently a sea bird that never leave the cliffs and could never be seen away from the coast.
No amount of conversation was going to change this , " I have been a birdwatcher all my life and run a birding group, you are wrong young man ."( hmm, wrong side of 55 but young is OK)
Even the appearance of the female Peregrine appeared and shreiked as she circled was not going to help ......... "That is not a Peregrine......... " Yeah right OK.
I wonder what he made of the Hobbies that are still streaking around their nesting site? |

| | | Re: It's official, the Peregrine is a sea bird! Frankfurt (Germany) has a pair of peregrines nesting of top of one of the tallest banking buildings. They are quite famous and have become a bit of an icon. The bank was unable to attach its new logo to the top of the building, because it didnt want to disturb the peregrins... Bless, eh??
Long way from the sea though... |

Adam | I was trying to think of a seabird that he might have been confusing with Peregrine (we all get names muddled now and again even though we know what we mean really) and I missed the obvious (for me! ) Doh!!!!

| | | Re: It's official, the Peregrine is a sea bird! I'm just grateful they're making a comeback and colonising towns and cities (even those not by the sea...). Amazing birds. Am I right in thinking they are the fastest living creatures? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
