| | | Sparrows on Niger Seed?! any one else with reports of House sparrows on Niger Seed?
When other seeds run low on my bird table, at least one or two Sparros in my gardens have a go at the Niger seed feeder! |

House Sparrows have a diverse diet including seeds, buds, scraps, the odd butterfly or two etc, good luck to them if they can get past the Goldfinches |

Haven't seen goldfinch feeding on them since early summer when parents and young were feeding.

| | | Re: Sparrows on Niger Seed?! My flock of House Sparrows have virtually driven the small number of visiting Goldfinches away at present. They physically push them off the niger feeder perches!
I put up a new mixed seed feeder next to the niger seed feeder then slowly moved it across the garden over about a week, (Yetis prowl very slowly ), taking the Sparrows with it.
But that needs filling daily and if I forget the Sparrows are back at the niger seed.

| | | Re: Sparrows on Niger Seed?! Well, that's useful to know.
I've had a big bag of niger seed going to waste all summer, because I bought it (along with a niger seed feeder) all bright and hopeful back in April... and it's been hanging there; sad and neglected ever since. It had a big cobweb on it at one point.
I shall mix the niger seed in with the regular bird seed... the sparrows have been hard at it all morning, and if they like it, they are welcome to it! |

I would not give up on goldfinches just yet, I have not been getting many at all of late, but expect they will be back as soon as thistle seed runs out, has been a huge crop of it this year near to me. MIKE |
