I used to buy peanuts from the pet shop but as the bird numbers increased due to house building on the surrounding fields, I started buying in bulk from the garden centre.
A 25kg was £18, then 2 years ago it went up to £23 and then £30 over winter and back to £23 last summer. Last Christmas it went up to £33 (they said there was a shortage and initially were only selling small bags which worked out at £41 for 25kg.)
I hoped they would come down during the summer but they didn't and are still £33. I have had to ration them severely and don't know how I will cope if 50 starlings turn up again this winter.
I wonder if peanuts will increase in price again for the winter?
As for longer term bird feeding, with the human population increasing by
1 billion every 10-15 years and bio fuel production increasing I wonder how the bird food production will cope and at what cost?
