I saw a bird today, very tame. I noticed it look at me and as I walked towards it, it didn't fly away just sort of backed off a little bit and kept looking at me intently. I was able to throw some food to it and was able to get quite close to it before it flew away.
I wandered if it could have been a young bird as they are often a bit more tame.
In any case - it was quite small, a little bigger than a robin. It was the same sort of shape as a nightingale and had the same type of beak.
It had a brownish back, black wing tips and little bit of yellow at the side/tip of the wing. It also had a reddish brown breast.
I thought it was a chaffinch first of all, but there was no grey cap, so I thought perhaps a female - but the beak seemed too long and dark. My only conclusion is that it was a waxwing - but I didn't see a crest and it doesn't seem the right time of year for them.
Any ideas?
