passage birds can be way high and difficult to spot. But, bee-eaters are very garrulous so when you get used to their continous "quilp-quilp" call you can pick them out a mile away.

They will be on the move around now, if you want to see them again (this year) it might be worth having another look. However they will probably have moved on.
