| | | Where is the best place for a birding holiday? I know there will be so many different answers here, but if it helps here is what Im looking for. I am not that interested in foreign birds, but birds that turn up in the UK do appeal to me (Great Grey Shrike for example) Im looking for a holiday in the UK or abroad that will offer good photo opportunities, also what time of year I should go there. Ive been looking at one in Hungary where Hawfinches are a good possibility, but that seems to be the most interesting one. I guess I might be looking for a bit much here and doubt any one will be able to help, but if any one can help I will find them here I am sure. Look forward to hearing any destinations if any are suggested, thanks.

A great place for migratory birds too!

Norfolk could be a possibility for the Great Grey Shrike that you mention, there are a few localities in the county that regularly have them wintering, and although they can be very elusive it can be possible to get close enough for photos if you are able to approach carefully using available cover.
Other photo opportunities for a mid winter holiday would potentially include Shore Larks, Snow Buntings, Brent and Pink-footed Geese, and a variety of waders (potentially also Hawfinch as well, but close views are the norm at the best known site). |

| | | Re: Where is the best place for a birding holiday? depending on when your planning your holiday is key here. can you take them at the drop of a hat ? migrant birds will be heading into britain in the coming weeks as well as ours leaving, one country i went to was bulgaria, and that had a great diversity of birds including shrikes, rossy. |

I was fortunate enough to see a brown bear in the Tatra Mountains in the south too.
