With experience it is possible to tell both Meadow & Tree Pipit and Willow Warbler & Chiffchaff apart without hearing either songs or calls. The problem is with identifying them from photographs, when even if a series of photos are posted the more diagnostic features can be difficult to assess properly due to angles etc (if they are visible at all). |

| | | Re: Thrush? Must agree with roy not that easy to id from photo and could easy be either meddow or tree pipit, and meddow pipits will often perch in shrubs small trees as have seen them many times doing so, I am still leaning to wards tree pipit but must addmit only 60/50 and only due to me thinking bill looks bit thick and heavy but this could be the angle of the photo mike |

Thanks to everyone who joined this debate. One thing is for sure - I was wrong. I'll take it as tree pipit. I always appreciate the assistance given by folks on the forums because I, and no doubt, many others would remain ignorant. |

| | | Re: Thrush? Just thought tree pipt was worth consideration but after re-reading that it was seen in fields it is more likely a meadow pipit which obviously would also perch on a bush. |

| | | Re: Thrush? I've looked a my small field guide and can understand the differences of opinion - to the inexperienced there is NO physical difference between tree & meadow pipit!
For the record it was a calm day in a area of fields and hedgerows with only a few trees. |

I dont think habitat is that crucial at this time of year as tree pipits are summer vistors and some will be on passage now,and will seen out side of normal habitat, I am still leaning towards tree pipit 60/40 but as others have said it is not an easy id to call and could well be either a meddow or tree pipit MIKE | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
