| Latest installment in the Lesser Scaup Saga Just got an email from the County Recorder for the Outer Hebrides: The bird I photographed on Saturday was a Greater Scaup, there are at present 2 Male Greater Scaup on Coot Loch and 2 Male Lesser Scaup on Coot Loch and 2 Male Lesser Scaup on other lochs around the Island. His advice was:The Lesser needless to say is smaller - Tufted Duck size with a slightly darker back and a different head shape. The best time to see this when the birds are resting as when diving they can look quite round headed as for Greater. There are also differences in both upper and underwings but this can be difficult to see.
My Sunday pictures were too blurry to see, so John you were spot on again with your indentification! I am not back for a couple of weeks, work committement in Stornoway but I will try again if not missed the boat!
AND.........the recorder wanted a picture of my little Gull as these birds are rare up here at this time of year (not sure he trusted my ID...but all my friends here agreed with me).
Thanks again for your kind support and words......when you work away from your partner and friends....you need support of some kind and I feel like I now got a huge family!!
