| | | Bird id book Hi
I wonder if anyone could offer me some advice.
There are many threads like this but can't find exactly what I'm after.
I'd like to return to some bird-watching after many years in the wilderness, and my beloved bird book is out of date. I have (I believe - I hesitate as I took the cover off to make field use easier) Ferguson-Lees & Willis (probably 1983 ed. The Shell Guide?). I like the drawings and the maps in this book. I don't like photo-id guides generally.
Not looking for heaps of habitat notes as am an ecologist anyway.
Am therefore looking for decent illustrations, up-to-date maps of breeding and overwintering distribution, some jizz notes....
Any suggestions please?
Mel

Mind, the old Shell Guide was brilliant in its day, being the first British field guide to illustrate a lot of vagrants, including the American ones, and it was quite a challenge to tick off ALL the "Regulars" in the main part of the book!

| | | Re: Bird id book Thanks all very much
I just bought the 2nd edition on Amazon.
I recall once having a book, now with a former partner :-( about bird jizz. I may try to find that too. It was quite fun as I remember but only had it for a short while.
My next query will be about new bins, but will search the forum first
Paxton Pits or Fen Drayton on Sun (weather permitting) to see what I can remember :-)

| | | Re: Bird id book Birds of the Western Palearctic 3 volume set (or the complete set of course it
can even be had on DVD or I believe a smart phone app.)
The Collins Bird Guide
The Hamlyn Guide Birds of Britain and Europe
The Readers Digest Birds of Britain
Not a photo in sight in any of them, just beautifully illustrated
