| | | Great spotted woodpecker I've just managed to identify the woodpecker (s) on my peanut feeder. I'm pleased to say they are the Great Spotted woodpecker. They've been visiting for a couple of years but I'd never been able to identify them before, I'm so pleased.
Forgive the excitment but I'm new to this so I get all squealy about it.

guardian | Feel free to vent your excitement here for us to share. I get a real thrill when I spot something new in my garden and just have to tell someone!
We get regular woodpeckers to our feeders, too. They are lovely to watch.
Welcome to WAB, by the way.

guardian | Nothing to forgive, If I'd seen a GSW in my garden, my excitement would have been almost uncontrollable!! |

| | | Re: Great spotted woodpecker Know what you mean Guardian, I watch the GSW on my friend's feeder (seething with Jealousy ) and wondered why they can not move up to my feeders - after all we have no trains at the bottom of the garden but I can go there and watch them so I am fortunate to be able to get squealy there.

| | | Re: Great spotted woodpecker You enjoy your GSW Guardian- woodpeckers are fabulous birds to watch. Fortunately both Green + Great-spotted have become much more common in recent decades, even in urban areas, so more of us can enjoy them .
Unfortunately Lessers are becoming scarcer + not always an easy bird to track down. I've not seen one since 2005, despite several sites within a few miles of home. |

I get the GSW regularly at my feeders but every time they do I get the same feeling as you. I never tire of seeing them wherever I am as they are fabulous looking birds and real characters.

John | The thing that really pleases me is when the bring their babies to the peanuts, and first feed them, then the babies get the idea and feed themselves.
