| | | Bitterns at Minsmere Spent 5 and a half hours in the Bittern Hide at Minsmere yesterday.
Saw 7 flights by Bitterns. Some very short, one very distant and one very long. 3 different birds I think.
Got a couple of photos. One below. Needs a lot more Photoshop work to bring the bird out a bit more from the background. But I had heard these are hard birds to photo. Fly very short bursts and very close to the reeds.
At least I have a recognisable photo, which is my critieria for any bird to go on my Life List.
This one appeared very suddenly on very short flight and I got this shot just as it went down into the reeds where it hid very quickly and very effectively!
Also saw a Kingfisher for a few moments. Not long enough though............
Reserve looked to be very quiet at present. For birds that is. Lots of people there. Maybe the birds were in their own hides looking at all the humans?

| | | Re: Bitterns at Minsmere I think this time of year usually goes a bit quiet for birds. The winter migrants will be arriving more and more from August.
Well done on your Bittern shot, definately not the easiest bird to photo, especially at Minsmere! Unless they fly right in front of you they're normally quite a way out.

| | | Re: Bitterns at Minsmere Thanks Nigel.
Me thinks I will be getting to know that hide quite well sometime in the future!
This is the other shot.
Again it suffers a bit from the bird being so close to the reeds. Need to give some thought to how I approach photographing that bird in the future. Although I know it is a hard enough bird to see not to ignore any opportunity that presents itself.
You could add a couple of engines on each wing and you'd have a Lockheed Hercules aircarft! LOL.
Cheers,
Bryan

| July August not the best months for business of birds at Minsmere. Winter migrants not back (spotted redshanks excepted) and this breeders pushed off.
Lovely close shots of the bittern though - jealous. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
