Help me to identify this bird...?

Hello, my mother-in-law took some pics of this bird and needs some help to id it. Its the size of a very large pigeon, the beak is crow-like and mostly black, and it has unusual tufty feathers on its head. It looks like a baby bird of some kind but its pretty big. Any ideas? All help much appreciated!

Thanks John - that's what I said :-). She's not convinced because its so big and the beak is so black. I'm having trouble finding any pictures of baby jays that look like this one, but I can't see what else it could be. I'll tell her we have another vote for a jay. Thanks again.
