| | | dead blackbird fledgling Please help? i am quite baffled about this and feel quite upset. I found a blackbird fledgling on my garden path a few days ago and because there are a lot of cats in this area i moved it into a bush over the road out of sight, the last couple of days the male parent has been feeding it and yesterday i saw it in the neighbours garden on her path all exposed so lastnight i placed it under the hedge so it would be safe. I have been out all day and went to have a quick look and couldnt see it out again, so looked under the bush and it was lying there dead, i feel really awful like it was my fault could it have been unwell as when i went near it yesterday it didnt even move ?? it didnt have all of its feathers either. Also to make it worse i saw a squashed bird on my street last week which looked like a female blackbird which i think could have been the other parent as this male was on his own. Does anybody have any ideas why this bird could have died???? its so sad |

| | | Re: dead blackbird fledgling It didnt sound healthy, they are quite approachable when young but would not normally allow you to get that close to pick it up. It sounds like its been attacked, hit by a car, flown into a window or had an illness. Can only speculate without seeing the bird.

| | | Re: dead blackbird fledgling When baby Blackbirds leave the nest it is usual for the males to take over the feeding and the females to start building another nest for a second brood, so the dead female you saw could have had nothing to do with this family. Unfortunately a high proportion of fledglings die from all sorts of reasons.

| | | Re: dead blackbird fledgling Emma - try not to be too upset - you did your best for the bird, and many juveniles don't survive their first year. According to the BTO's Bird Facts site, for blackbirds: "Juvenile Survival: 0.564 (in First-Year)" Find a species | BTO - British Trust for Ornithology | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
