| | | Big baby, crow or raven? Hello,
I found 3 weeks ago a baby crow or raven that has been hurt by a fox or a dog...
I am caring for it has it has lost its parents and can't fly. It also caught a cold because it was stuck and as it was raining the bird was wet for a long period...
I am feeding the baby crow/raven with cat food, it seems ok.
I think it is a raven because it is bigger than the adults crows that lives in the area. Now about 30 cm but still growing, it still has baby features and open its beak to ask something to eat. It gently started to fly last week...
I am new on the forum and I don't know how to add a photo... if someone can give some explication, I will send some picture...
Thank you to let me know what you think.

| | | Re: Big baby, crow or raven? There is a good link at the top of the Forum pages think it is the second line. Basically you have to reduces or compress your photo which ever way is easiest the put them in the library section to put in your thread. I still go a bit round in circles doing it but get there in the end.
I would love to see some photos of Mr. Raven.

| | | Re: Big baby, crow or raven? It's either a Carrion Crow (a full-grown bird, not a baby) or possibly a juvenile Jackdaw. A bit hard to tell from those pics (30 cm suggests Jackdaw). It's definitely not a Raven. |

It is definitely too big to be a jackdaw and has no grey part and there is no doubt, it is a very young bird, it still has some baby features and doesn't eat by itself. It started to 'fly' last week... but not very high...
It has some white at the end of some features in the back that has been appearing during the last 3 days...
As it was/is hurt it had no 'voice' but started some days ago to try to use its 'voice'... |

| | | Re: Big baby, crow or raven? Carrion crow. Jackdow juveniles are distinctively different to this. The blue eyes and short bright bill for a start. |

It can be a carrion crow but why is it bigger than the adults crow that are living in the area and is not adult yet...
Do you know how old it could be? |

The bill looks a bit stubby at that angle, and the size quoted is pretty small for Carrion Crow (if it's accurate). But I think it prob is a Carrion Crow too, though it's very late for a fledgling (if it is one).
melino - juvenile Jackdaws don't have grey napes - they are blackish all over.
Edit: cross-posting with new pic - definitely a juvenile Carrion Crow, hatched this spring (should be in April, but this one seems younger). The size difference is maybe just an illusion - you wont know unless you've measured the adults too.
