| | | Largest bird dropping in Cumbria There can't be many bigger than this one!
Found today on top of a drystone wall on an upland site. The mass appears to be made of smaller diameter stuff. Broken apart, the constituents look like seeds with a few very small broken bits of elytra.
Stretched out it's wider than my hand and much thicker than my thumb.
Would anyone venture an ID of the bird that dropped this one? |

| | | Re: Largest bird dropping in Cumbria I was thinking Raven, NicolaB. There are plenty about but I've never seen Raven poo like this. I tend to think the bulk is created by the fibrous content and somewhat similar to Black Grouse.
As for Sharon and Tracy, their preferred habitat is Bowness or Ambleside, not far from the Hole in't Wall or Sportsmans. |

| | | Re: Largest bird dropping in Cumbria The pictured dropping looks in form to be consistent with those produced by grouse.
Incubating females, who have spent a long time inactive on the nest, can produce exceptionally large, blocky, fibrous droppings ... known as 'clockers' .... due to the prolonged inactivity and an enlarged cloaca. |
