Where have my Tree Sparrows gone ?

A month or two ago we had quite a few tree sparrows breeding around our house and using the feeders.
Since then I haven't seen a single one. Plenty of house sparrows but no tree sparrows.
Do they disappear off into the countryside when breeding has finished ? We were away on holiday for a couple of weeks when the feeders were empty, just wondering whether they have taken the hump and gone to find somebody who treats them better !

it could be the reason as we still have some in our garden although not as many as last year which I put down to the harsh winter or maybe they're just taking their annual vacation and will be back all tangoed in a couple of weeks
