Is it Spring already?

Spring in January?

A mate of mine took a photo of Daffoldils out in Devon today.

... and I spent a good 30min watching Moorhens scrapping over territioy in our local park.

Of course there's no such thing as Global Warming

I've uploaded 4 photos of the Moorhens slugging it out to the gallery. They don't mess about!

Re: Is it Spring already?

My mother in Law has Bluetits taking nesting material into the bird box already.

No bird expert but isn't that a bit early?

Re: Is it Spring already?

I would expect things to be much more advanced in the south-west, but Peterborough is in the east midlands. The weather is usually colder than in Devon and Cornwall. It would be interesting to know if there are signs of spring in Yorkshire and other northern areas. Surely it is only by knowing ones locality is it possible to see if things are changing over a number of years. This is one of the reasons why the closing of the CEH Research Centres is so wrong. They have been keeping records of each area's seasons and the changes year on year. To move some of the research to other areas means the loss of those records for the centres which will be closed.

I'm in the North West - Wigan - where the trees are in bud and the Moorhens are scrapping away like it's March!

I've just been into the garden, and can hear a frog croaking - a little early perhaps?

Can anybody say what is happening in the Chilterns. If memory serves usually quite a bit colder in winter. No Gulfstream.

Re: Is it Spring already?

Mallards are scrapping in Hemel Hemstead and a few early Water Voles have been reported on the grand union outside our office.

Might get the bat deyector out tonight as it's mild - Numbers of bats in hibernacula in bedfordshire were much lower last week then the December checks so some must be active.

Re: Is it Spring already?

The Christmas tree in the town of March, Cambridgeshire, must remain in place for at least three more weeks, as a Collared Dove nest, complete with two chicks, has been discovered in it.

Re: Is it Spring already?

Collard Doves will breed all through the year, like feral pigeons.

The New Atlas of Breeding Birds gives mid February to October for Britain, but maybe that has changed in twelve years or so.

Now the first birds have fledged, they thought they could now remove the tree, but another nest with eggs has appeared! Looks like March's Christmas tree will become permanent!

The council are saving money by leaving the Christmas tree from one year to the next. Doesn't reduce the comunity charge though.

We actually have our own micro climate, living on the escarpment. It is very very cold, and whilst it can rain just a few hundred yards down the road, on the hill it turns to snow, as it did last week!

No, because the money they are saving on trees is being spent on sending workmen out to March every twenty one days to inspect the one they have!
