| | | Not a Nightjar . . .? I wonder if anyone can help with IDing a mysterious sound I've heard here the last few summers? Initially I thought it was a nightjar, but having finally got round to listening to some recordings I don't think it is - it's deeper and less twittery, with a slower 'pulse'. The nearest I can get to describing it is a sheep baaing under water. I hear it at dusk, only in summer. I'm in Mayo, in the west of Ireland: the area is fairly remote, at the foot of a mountain, with a mixture of bog and scrub, and some mixed forestry. We're about 30 miles from the sea. (Of course, given all the rain we've had it's not impossible it really is a sheep under water!)
Any ideas gratefully received! |

| | | Re: Not a Nightjar . . .? Many thanks for the suggestions and links. I'm now pretty sure it's snipe - there are loads of them in the locality (a pair nested in the wild end of our garden last year) and the recordings of drumming sound exactly right. Mystery solved! |
