| | | Which bird sounds like a flashgun charging? I've heard this a couple of times now this year.
Its a pure unwavering tone sweeping from low to high, very much like a flashgun charging between flashes, but at a somewhat lower freqency.
It almost sounds too electronic to be a bird, but I've heard it in two completley different locations now, today being close to the centre of Leeds. |

Broad daylight in an urban area.
I heard Greenfinches at the same time, I'm wondering if it might have been one of them doing some lesser heard call. |

It is often said that a Grasshopper Warbler makes a sound like "fishing reel ratchet". Modern fishing reels have quieter ratchets but if you remember the old ones-----

I'm pretty sure birds have regional accents.
I took great pains once, whilst living in Scotland, to analyse and memorise the Chaffinch song. That one that goes "brrr brrr brrr biddle boddle biddle give me some cheese - brrrrrrrrrrrh."
Only to find the ones down south have their own version with different numbers of syllables.
The Greenfinch call I am referring to in this thread came right out of the blue - I am used to hearing Greenfinches but this was so alien I didn't even consider it might be a Greenfinch, despite hearing it amongst other Greenfinch calls.
Its not quite the same as the recording highlighted here, but close enough to be pretty much convinced thats what it was.
Perhaps this one had taken the bus from London to visit his Mum.
I heard a very similar call a while ago in Kent. |

| | | Re: Which bird sounds like a flashgun charging? Yeah, I live in Orkney and after 8 years I am still confusing Dunnocks song with Wrens.
The Orcadian Dunnock has a lot in common with the Warwickshire wren song | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
