| | | Which birds eat dried mealworms? Been feeding the coal, blue and great tits from a window feeder with black sunflower seed, which goes down well - thought I'd give the guys some variety, and came back from the store with a bag of dried mealworms.
They pick them up and have a peck, but seem to discard them when they find there's no 'meat' in them, or when they find that it's just a dried husk, essentially. They pick out the seeds and the worms are all left in the feeder tray
Which birds are likely to find these appealling? Shall I try soaking the worms to rehydrate them before putting them out? |

| | | Re: Which birds eat dried mealworms? Blackbirds, Starlings, Robins and Dunnocks eat the dried mealworms here; the tits prefer sunflower hearts and fat - balls, cakes, nibbles - just as long as it's a fat product! Mind, the Starlings go for the fat things too and the House Sparrows seem to like the fat balls above everything else, with odd trips to the sunflower hearts.

| | | Re: Which birds eat dried mealworms? Not sure about the nutritional value, but on close inspection the drying process seems to have removed all 'body' from the worm, leaving, as I mentioned, a dried-out, hollow, husk.
However, those which the tits discarded, and which ended up on the sun lounge roof were hoovered up by the young collared doves. |

| | | Re: Which birds eat dried mealworms? They do they are full of protein, ive read that people soak them in water first to plump them back up. Mine are always taken by the starlings before anything else gets a chance lol | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
